Hit and Miss Engine Restoration Project

A New Challenge!! "Hit and Miss" engines, popular sources of mechanical power from about 1890 through 1940's, were used to generate power for a variety of uses on land as well as on sea-going craft.  One of these rare engines, a G.D. Thorndyke 2 HP unit, was in the Cooper House when it was gifted to the Society.  The history of our engine is unknown; however knowing that the building was once owned by C.A. Small who, with B.F. Small, operated a few sailing vessels, we locally believe it was once used as a labor-saving device aboard a vessel.

Restoration and Preservation of Ship Models

The Machiasport Historical Society is proud to engage the services of BlueJacket Shipcrafters, out of Searsport, to restore and enclose in glass cases, our models of the ships Jenny Lynn Kreger, Aldine and Venus..

Major work done on the Gates House & Cooper House during Covid-19 closure.

The Machiasport Historical Society took advantage of being closed last summer, by doing major work to the outside of the Gates House.  We were very fortunate to acquire the services of Erik Squire, a well-known local carpenter who specializes in restoring historical buildings.  

We are now having both the Gates House and the Cooper House repainted and hope to complete these projects by early summer in time to welcome visitors.
